About NSS Unit

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. Launched in 1969, NSS aims to develop the personality and character of students through voluntary community service. At Government Arts and Science College for Women, Sathankulam, our NSS unit has been actively contributing to community development and nation-building for several years.

NSS Motto: "Not Me, But You" - This motto reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of the other person's point of view.

NSS Badge: The NSS badge carries the "Konark Wheel" which has eight bars signifying the 24 hours of the day, reminding volunteers that they should be ready for service 24 hours a day.

Objectives of NSS

The primary objectives of the National Service Scheme are:

  • To understand the community in which students work
  • To understand themselves in relation to their community
  • To identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving
  • To develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
  • To utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems
  • To develop competence required for group living and sharing of responsibilities
  • To gain skills in mobilizing community participation
  • To acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes
  • To develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters
  • To practice national integration and social harmony

NSS Unit Structure

Our college NSS unit is structured as follows:

  • Unit Strength: 100 volunteers per unit (we have multiple units)
  • Programme Officer: Faculty member appointed to coordinate NSS activities
  • Student Coordinators: Selected from NSS volunteers to assist in organizing activities
  • Advisory Committee: Comprising Principal, Programme Officer, and senior faculty members
  • Volunteers: Students enrolled in the NSS unit who commit to 120 hours of service per year

Regular Activities

Our NSS unit organizes various regular activities throughout the year:

  • Weekly Activities (2 hours): Campus cleaning, tree plantation, awareness campaigns
  • Special Camping Programme: 7-day residential camp in adopted villages
  • Blood Donation Camps: Regular blood donation drives in collaboration with hospitals
  • Health Awareness Programs: Sessions on hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention
  • Literacy Programs: Adult education classes and tuition for underprivileged children
  • Environmental Conservation: Tree plantation, waste management, and cleanliness drives
  • Women Empowerment: Skill development workshops and awareness programs
  • Social Awareness Campaigns: Programs on important social issues like drug abuse, road safety, etc.

Special Camping Programme

The Special Camping Programme is a unique feature of NSS where volunteers live in villages for 7 days. Key aspects include:

  • Duration: 7 days and 6 nights during December/January
  • Location: Adopted villages in rural areas
  • Activities:
    • Village survey and need assessment
    • Health camps and medical check-ups
    • Sanitation and cleanliness drives
    • Cultural programs and entertainment for villagers
    • Awareness sessions on various topics
    • Skill development workshops
    • Infrastructure development work (minor repairs, painting, etc.)
  • Learning Experience: Volunteers gain first-hand experience of rural life and develop empathy

National Days Celebrations

NSS volunteers actively participate in celebrating various national days:

  • Republic Day (January 26): Flag hoisting, cultural programs, and patriotic activities
  • Independence Day (August 15): National flag hoisting and community service
  • Gandhi Jayanti (October 2): Cleanliness drives and peace rallies
  • National Youth Day (January 12): Youth development activities
  • World Environment Day (June 5): Tree plantation and environmental awareness
  • International Women's Day (March 8): Programs on women empowerment
  • World AIDS Day (December 1): Awareness campaigns on HIV/AIDS

Community Service Projects

Our NSS volunteers are involved in various community service projects:

  • Village Adoption: Regular visits and development work in adopted villages
  • Digital Literacy: Teaching basic computer skills to rural youth and elderly
  • Road Safety Awareness: Campaigns on safe driving and traffic rules
  • Disaster Management: Training in first aid and emergency response
