About NMS Scheme
The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMS) Scheme is a centrally sponsored initiative by the Government of India, aimed at providing financial assistance to meritorious students from economically weaker sections. At Government Arts and Science College for Women, Sathankulam, we actively facilitate and support our students in availing this scholarship to continue their higher education without financial constraints.
Objectives of NMS
The primary objectives of the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme are:
- To award scholarships to meritorious students from economically weaker sections to arrest their drop-out at class VIII and encourage them to continue their studies at the secondary stage
- To provide financial assistance to cover part of their day-to-day expenses and continue their education
- To promote equity in education by providing opportunities to economically disadvantaged students
- To encourage students to excel academically despite financial challenges
- To reduce the burden of educational expenses on families from lower income groups
Eligibility Criteria
Students must meet the following criteria to be eligible for NMS:
- Academic Performance: Students should have secured at least 55% marks or equivalent grade in Class VII examination
- Family Income: Parental income from all sources should not exceed Rs. 3,50,000/- per annum
- Regular Student: Must be studying in a recognized institution
- Age Limit: As per government guidelines
- Documentation: Must possess all required certificates (income certificate, caste certificate if applicable, marks cards, etc.)
Scholarship Amount and Benefits
The scholarship provides the following benefits:
- Financial Assistance: Rs. 12,000/- per annum (Rs. 1,000/- per month) for 10 months
- Duration: From Class IX to Class XII, subject to fulfilling continuation conditions
- Direct Transfer: Amount is directly credited to the student's bank account through DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer)
- Renewal: Scholarship is renewable every year based on academic performance and eligibility
Application Process
The application process for NMS at our college involves:
- Online Application: Students must apply through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at scholarships.gov.in
- Registration: Create an account on the NSP with valid email ID and mobile number
- Form Filling: Complete the application form with accurate personal, academic, and family details
- Document Upload: Upload scanned copies of required documents (income certificate, domicile certificate, marks cards, bank passbook, Aadhaar card, etc.)
- Institute Verification: Submit the application form to the college for verification
- Approval: After college verification, the application is forwarded to the district and state authorities for final approval
Required Documents
Students must submit the following documents for NMS application:
- Completed application form (online)
- Income certificate (issued by competent authority)
- Domicile certificate / Residence proof
- Class VII & VIII mark sheets
- Caste certificate (if applicable - for SC/ST/OBC students)
- Bank account details (passbook copy)
- Aadhaar card
- Passport size photographs
- Self-declaration form

Important Dates
Students are advised to note the following important dates (subject to annual notifications):
- Application Period: Usually opens in July/August every year
- Last Date for Application: As notified on the NSP portal
- Institute Verification Period: Within 15 days of submission
- Result Declaration: As per state government schedule
- Disbursement: Usually in two installments during the academic year
Renewal Guidelines
For renewal of NMS scholarship in subsequent years:
- Students must secure at least 55% marks in the previous class examination
- Should have at least 75% attendance in the previous academic year
- Family income should remain within the prescribed limit
- Must continue studies in a recognized institution
- Should not be availing any other merit scholarship from government sources
- Must submit renewal application within the specified time period
